Flat-Pack Furniture Design for Teens

This fun and technically challenging course for teens expands digital fabrication skills using the computer-numerically-controlled router (CNC). Students learn basic 3-D modeling techniques to design functional furniture objects. Projects are cut out of plywood on the CNC and laser cutters. Workflows cover toolpathing and g-code generation, material setup, machine operation, and wood finishing. Everyone walks away with a finished piece of furniture and some new fabrication skills.

Skateboard Construction and Design

This hands-on workshop for teens explores state-of-the-art techniques in skateboard design and construction, giving every participant the opportunity to create their own unique, functional skateboard. We begin with modeling finger boards and miniature skatepark features using 3-D software and 3-D printers. For the final project, students learn essential techniques in mold making, vacuum press bent lamination, laser cutting, and stencil work. Students walk away from the workshop with an introduction to general tools, equipment and software, and with a fully completed skateboard, ready for shredding at the local park.

Nurture a love of creative exploration through technology. This workshop delves into combining 2-D and 3-D technologies as an artistic tool where students playfully examine the border between the digital and the physical worlds. Activities include 3-D printing, laser-cutting, and UV printing. Students will have ample opportunity to explore their own ideas. The workshop culminates with a group exhibition and reception at the end of the week.
